In Christ, we see the ‘now’ but ‘not-all-yet’ of salvation without dismay. Because we NOW have in part, we will THEN have in full.
The now/not-all-yet tension familiar from Romans is also seen in 1 John, the subject of our most recent sermon series. John’s writing, rather than being self-contradicting, reflects this tension. Born of God we cannot keep on sinning: this is true now, and will be fully true then. So in this world, we continue to acknowledge our sin and to rely on his forgiveness; and we are not dismayed because his blood [atoning death] cleanses us from all sin. But we know that then, when he is revealed, we will be like him and free from the presence of all sin.
